Did you know that...? history of Opel:
Opel automotibile GmbH, known commercially as Opel, is a German automotive brand founded on January 21, 1862 by the German Adam Opel, originally was a company dedicated to the manufacture of sewing machine.
Belonging to the mutinational Stellantis, a company based in the Netherlands and to which Fiat, Chrysler and the PSA group belong. Between 1929 and 2017 it belonged to General Motors to become part of the PSA group in 2017 which merged with FCA in 2021 giving rise to the aforementioned Stellantis.
In its beginnings, in addition to manufacturing sewing machines, from 1886 it was also dedicated to the manufacture and marketing of bicycles. In 1895 after the death of the founder Adam Opel, the heirs of the brand considered to take a leap and start in the automotive world, one of the main reasons was the fall in bicycle sales. They acquired the company Anhaltische Motorwagenfabrik in 1897.
In 1899 Opel automotibile GmbH was born, with a production of 65 vehicles made by hand.
However, the first own vehicle would not come to light until 1902, after a few years of association with the French Renault and Darracq. In these early years Opel focused on low-displacement vehicles such as the " Volksautomobil "and the popular"Doktorwagen"
In 1924, the brand decided that the future was through the production chain of a model that met the needs of consumers, for them they launched the 4-cylinder Laubfrosch, which obtained a spectacular success.
In 1929, General motors acquired the Opel brand, one of the great successes of the brand at this time is the Opel kadett, becoming one of the best-selling models in Germany with more than 100,000 units sold
During the Second World War, Opel was dedicated to manufacturing ammunition, as well as military vehicles for the German army, thus becoming the target of several bombings.
After World War II, Opel suffered a halt in manufacturing due to the Soviets confiscating all machinery, therefore, until 1947 such production was not resumed, the first post-war Opel was the Olympia. In 1958, Opel launched the Rekord, the brand's first model to be exported to the United States. Years later, in 1962 Opel launched the first four-cylinder post-war Kadett.
During the 60s, Opel focused on large vehicles, both sendan and coupe. In 1980 the first front-wheel-drive Opel, the Kadett D, was manufactured. A year later the brand merged with the British company Vauxhall, so since then the brand markets its models in Great Britain under the Vahuxhall logo although the models are the same as the other models of the Opel brand.
Between 2000 and 2017 the brand's economic decline took place, with millions of losses until in 2017, the brand was sold to the PSA group.
In 2021 the brand merges with the FSA group, giving rise to the Stellantis.
Currently the brand has factories in Belgium, Spain, Poland and Hungary, Vahuxhall has a factory in Ellesmere Port, England.
