DID YOU KNOW THAT...? HISTORY OF AUDI:
Audi is a German multinational company in charge of manufacturing high-end and sports cars. Its headquarters are in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. Since 1965 it has been part of the Volkswagen Group.
Audi's tradition in the manufacture of cars and engines dates back to the nineteenth century.
In 1899, August Horch, a pioneer in the German automotive industry, founded the motor vehicle company Horch in Cologne.
After some financial difficulties he decided to leave the company and create a new automobile factory. This is how August Horch & Cie was born. Motorwagenwerke AG, Zwickau, 16 July 1909. August Horch lost the legal dispute over the company name, as it was previously registered with the same surname, and opted for the name Audi, the Latin translation of the German word ‘horch’. Months after the foundation, the automobile company was renamed ‘Audi Automobilwerke'.
The history of the four Audi hoops was born in 1932, specifically on June 29, as a symbol of the union of the four car manufacturers based in Saxony: Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer, who joined together to form Auto Union AG to cope with the difficulties arising from the Great Depression. At that time it was the second largest automobile group in Germany.
Within Auto Union AG each brand was dedicated to a specific segment: Audi, focused on luxury cars in the mid-range; DKW to its practical, reliable and economical vehicles that were sold in large quantities; Horch to the most powerful and high-quality vehicles; and Wanderer to the mid-range cars, then focusing more on the sporty and advanced aspects of the brand.
At the end of 1964, Volkswagen acquired the majority of the shares of Auto Union AG, setting up its headquarters again in Ingolstadt. The absolute property was acquired in 1966.
Audi just relaunched as a brand in 1968 with the presentation of the Audi 100, a family sedan.
In 1969, Auto Union AG merged with NSU based in Neckarsulm. NSU was the world's largest manufacturer of motorcycles but later switched to the production of small cars.
The Audi NSU model range covered a wide range of engines and driving concepts. In 1971 it led to the coining of a new advertising slogan “at the forefront of technology”. The slogan would end up being a statement of company objectives.
Audi, practically since its inception, has been on the side of art, encouraging and promoting new cultural initiatives.
The brand of the four rings supports disciplines such as music, theater and cinema, being next to entities such as the Academy of Arts and Cinematographic Sciences of Spain, and institutions such as the Palau de la Música in Barcelona and the Teatro Real in Madrid.
Audi is also next to sports, such as football, golf and skiing.
European football teams with the greatest projection put their trust in the technology of the Audi brand. The company collaborates with several teams as a sponsor and official supplier of vehicles, thus promoting values such as technique, progress and innovation built on teamwork.
Currently, Audi cars are manufactured in the two main assembly plants in Germany: Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm. Outside Germany it also produces vehicles in Brussels (Belgium), Györ (Hungary), Bratislava (Slovakia), Changchun (China), Aurangabad (India), Martorell (Spain) and San Jose Chiapa, Puebla (Mexico).
