Due to the success of French Darracq cars with the Italian public, in 1906 Alexandre Darracq decided to found the Società Italiana Automobili Darracq in the city of Naples. Later they would move to the Portello district, in Milan
After the few commercial results that were obtained, the general director Cavalier Ugo Stella, proposes the constitution of a new company. On June 24, 1910, ALFA (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili) was launched with headquarters in the Portello engineering plants and financed by the same investors who participated in Darracq.
ALPHA takes as symbols the red cross on a white background from the insignia of Milan and the Biscione, the serpent on a blue background from the insignia of the Visconti.
The first vehicle manufactured was the 24 HP, in 1911, becoming a great sales success for its extraordinary mechanics, reliability and comfort. Giuseppe Merosi, the company's first chief engineer, derived new models of this car such as the 12 HP, a simpler vehicle, and the 15 HP Corsa, with a vocation for racing.
The first authentic sports car of the brand would come out in 1913, the 40/60 HP 6-liter. Of this model, 27 vehicles were built and it made its debut in the Parma-Berceto hill race, winning in its category.
After the outbreak of the First World War came the first crisis of the company. The Banca Italiana di Sconto, which owns most of the shares, places Nicola Romeo as the bank's representative, thus obtaining control of the factory and redirecting the company to the manufacture of war material.
After the war is over, the company returns to its initial business. Nicola Romeo merges the Nicola Romeo Limited Company with ALFA, thus creating Alfa-Romeo Spa. The first vehicle to be created after World War I was the 4.2-liter 20/30 HP Torpedo, alongside its sports derivative the 20/30 ES. These two cars were the first to appear as Alfa-Romeo.
In 1921 Merosi created the model that will make Alfa Romeo famous in the world, the RL. This car, an elegant 3-liter 6-cylinder, would have 2,640 units.
Alfa Romeo and Enzo Ferrari began to bond in 1920 and, years later, became the brand's distributor for the Emilia-Romagna and Marcha regions. In 1929 the Società Anonima Scuderia Ferrari was founded, successfully entering Alfa Romeo cars in the main international races. In 1939 the pilot decided to leave the company and create his own company.
The so-called golden age of Alfa Romeo would come in the 1930s. The successes achieved by the brand at this stage were due, above all, to the engine legend Tazio Nuvolari. The models that Nuvolari and other pilots drove were the 6C and 8C models, and the Gran Prix single-seaters, achieving with them a series of victories in the races of the Mille Miglia and the Targa Florio, among others.
Before the war began, the factory was reorganized giving priority to the manufacture of military vehicles and aircraft engines.
The end of the Second World War brought momentous changes for the brand. The Portello factory suffered several bombings and, in 1945, it was returned to production by launching the 6C 2500, a car with a sporty appearance and great class.
In 1950 the 1900 was launched, the first series-produced Alfa Romeo car. It was marketed as "the family car that wins races," a four-door, five-seater saloon, selling more than 17,000 car copies.
In 1955 the Giulietta mid-range car was introduced, which had been preceded by the Giulietta Sprint a year earlier. The Giulietta marked the definitive establishment of Alfa Romeo as a major automobile manufacturer.
Years later, specifically in 1985 due to financial and commercial difficulties, the company was put up for sale. Fiat offered a total purchase and on November 6, 1986 Alfa Romeo would join the Fiat Group.
Currently, the owner is Stellantis N.V, an Italian-French-American international automobile group based in the Netherlands, the result of the merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Groupe PSA, and founded on January 16, 2021.
