Did you know that...?_
Subaru is a Japanese car brand, subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries or FHI a large Japanese industrial complex founded in 1953 after the dismantling of the Nakajima Aircraft Co. weapons factory. The activity of the FHI is very diversified and, in addition to cars, includes engines, scooters, industrial vehicles, aircraft, railway equipment and agricultural machinery.
Subaru was the first Japanese automobile company to use a Japanese name, corresponding to the name given to the star cluster that we know as The Pleiades. This is precisely where the stars of the brand logo come from.
The first Subaru model was originally named the P-1, but later renamed the Subaru 1500. It was a medium-sized car, with a 4-cylinder engine of 1485cc and 55 HP, 4-stroke and water-cooled.
The Subaru 1500 pioneered the use of an all-Japanese monocoque bodywork. It was a model designed for 4 passengers, intended to provide great comfort and stability in driving, carried independent suspension and a double-action oil regulator with rigid axle suspension of the rear steering. In addition, it featured a three-leaf spring and the combination of a dual-acting oil regulator.
Sales had to be suspended due to difficulties in financing factory equipment and chain sales, and it was not until four years later that a new Subaru model, the 360, appeared.
Subaru pioneered the implementation of all-wheel drive in passenger cars. All its models (except a subcompact only available in Japan) have this system, either as standard or as an extra option.
In 1958 they developed the model 360, featuring a two-stroke, two-cylinder rear engine, with an output of 16 hp. This small car was in production for 12 years.
In 1965 we have the Subaru 1000, a pioneer passenger car with 4 cylinders in boxer and water cooled, capable of delivering 55 horsepower and symmetrical front-wheel drive, a true technological achievement for the time.
In 1968 the export of its vehicles began, with a clear objective: the North American market. Subaru of America is founded by Malcolm Bricklin and Harvey Lamm.
That year 332 cars were imported, a figure that would rise to 172,216 in 2000.
In 1969 they launched the evolutions of the 1000 and 360 models, which will be the FF-1 and the R-2 respectively. Both with a significant increase in power compared to their predecessors.
In 1971 the era of all-wheel drive for Subaru begins. The Leone coupe and Station wagon model. To date only SUVs had 4-wheel drive, so Subaru surprises the world with this new trend.
Another peculiarity of the brand is the use of the boxer engine with horizontally opposed cylinders which gives its cars a lower center of gravity than cars that mount engines with V-cylinders or in line.
Technological developments continue year after year, until reaching the most emblematic model of the brand, the Subaru Impreza in 1992.
The success of this model in the World Rally make him jump to fame worldwide.
He won three consecutive titles and more than 50 races.
Between 1999 and 2005, General Motors was a minority shareholder with 20% of the shares, but in 2005, it decided to sell 8.7% of its shares to Toyota and put the rest up for sale on the open market. Toyota later expanded its stake and in 2008 held 16.5% of Subaru's shares.
