Fun facts: The Citroën car brand was born in France in 1919. It was founded by André Citroën and is currently owned by Stellantis as part of the Groupe PSA.
At Citroën, its commercial and competition vehicles stand out.
To talk about the beginnings of the company we have to go back to the 1900s, specifically to 1906. That year André Citroën was appointed administrator of the Mors Automobiles company, and reorganized the workshops defining the new models of the company. It is then that he introduced his most recognized invention to date, the double helical gears that perfected the movement of vehicles.
During a trip to Poland, André Citroën discovers a mechanism with gears in the form of a ‘chevron’ and understands that if he builds it in steel, the possibilities of this mechanism will increase, so he opts to buy the patent.
In 1912 the Citroën-Hinstin Gear Company was founded.
After the outbreak of war in 1914, mass production of grenades was required, so André Citroën proposed to the Ministry of War the manufacture of 10,000 grenades per day. For this he installs a modern plant in the Javel neighborhood.
After the end of the war, the facilities are used for the first time in Europe for the construction of a single model in series and thus reduce the price making it more accessible to customers.
In 1920, the company introduced the Type A Sport, a luxury series with sporty details. The prestige of the brand grows very fast after winning the great consumer prize at the Le Mans circuit. This type would be replaced by the B in 1921, the same year that the export of vehicles began.
A year later, the Citroën Caddy, the first sports car derived from a series model, and the Type C 5CV are presented.
In 1924 the Sant-Ouen factory began to operate, after Citroën adopted the first all-steel body for the B10. It is, from this moment, when all models start to be manufactured with this material. In 1925 the Citroën commercial network was created and the fleet of taxis they had in Paris was renewed.
The company increases production, reaching 1,000 cars a day in 1928.
Citroën's first front-wheel drive vehicle appeared in April 1934 under the name 7A.
After the Second World War, automobile production recovered little by little. The great novelty of Citroën arrives at the 1948 Motor Show, it would be the Citroën 2CV, an economical car with many possibilities of use.
At the Paris Motor Show in 1955, the DS 19 was presented, a revolutionary vehicle due to the technologies it carries such as hydropneumatic suspension with automatic height adjustment and front disc brakes. After this model, the DS 19 Pallas was released in 1964, equipped with an interior equipment with very careful details.
In 1976 PSA arrived, the group resulting from the merger with Peugeot S.A. The LN model is the first vehicle to come out of this merger.
The decade of the eighties begins with the C25, industrial cars manufactured and marketed together with Peugeot and Fiat.
The new organization of PSA Peugeot Citroën arrives on January 21, 1998. A year later, the company breaks its historical sales record with more than one million vehicles, improving its results for the third year in a row.
This decade ends with obtaining the ISO 9001 certificate, with Citroën being the first brand to achieve it in the automotive industry.
