Since 1930, Jaguar has been known for its luxurious saloons and sports cars.
Jaguar Cars was founded by William Lyons in 1922 under the name Swallow Sidecar Company. It was renamed Jaguar Cars after World War II because of the unfortunate connotations of the initials ‘SS’.
The founder of the company, issued detailed instructions for the visual identity of the brand was the well-known jumping jaguar, whose objective was to convey an image of elegance combined with power.
It was in 1935 that the company's Jaguar Cars name was first used. Giving name to a sedan with 2½-liter engine presented by SS.45. Followed by this, they launched a two-seater sports model equivalent to the sedan, the SS Jaguar 100, but with a 3½-liter engine.
For almost 30 years the brand became increasingly famous by creating a series of spectacular, and quite striking, sports cars, among which we can highlight: the Jaguar XK, the Jaguar XK140, the Jaguar XK150 and the Jaguar E-Type. It was its racing cars that achieved great triumphs in international motorsport, a path followed in the 1950s to demonstrate the reliability of the engineering of the company's products.
One of the most relevant engines of this brand was the Jaguar XK6 engine (six-cylinder propeller with double camshaft). This development is notable because the engine was conceived before the war and realized while engineers at the Coventry plant divided their time between observing the fires and designing the new engine. Because from 1948 the fuel octane rating was relatively low, they offered three piston configurations: domed (high octane rating), flat (medium octane rating) and depressed (low octane rating).
William "Bill" Heynes, assisted by Walter "Wally" Hassan, mainly developed the engine, which had double camshafts at the head of the engine. The engine they created following the one mentioned above, became Jaguar's main engine (mainly used in the XK 120, Mk VII Sedan, Mk I and II Sedans and XK 140 and 150). An important fact of this engine is that it was also used in the Jaguar E-type, a race car that managed to win several important tests.
So the Jaguar brand stands out for its types of engines as they demonstrated a very good quality and durability. For example, Jaguar used the Twin OHC XK Engine, as it became known, in vehicles from sedans such as the XJ6 to suvs such as the Stonefield (with four-wheel drive), always properly maintained, the standard production XK engine that normally reached 320,000 km of useful life.
In the early 60s Jaguar bought the well-known British brand, Daimler, which specialized in luxury saloons (usually used by members of the royal family). So, from that moment, Jaguar and Daimler work ‘hand in hand', creating similar products. In 1989 Jaguar was acquired by Ford, which caused a new period for the brand.
The company was autonomous until 1966, when it became part of the nationalized British Motor Corporation. From this fact it went through various situations for various groups until it now belongs to the Indian industrial and automobile group Tata Motors.
