DID YOU KNOW THAT...? BMW HISTORY
The BMW is a German manufacturer of high-end cars and motorcycles. Its headquarters are in Munich. Mini, Rolls-Royce and BMW Bank are subsidiaries of BMW.
The German brand is a world leader in sales, as far as high-end manufacturers are concerned. Its main competitors are Audi, Lexus, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz.
Before BMW, the predecessor was Rapp Motorenwerke GmbH, founded in 1913 by Karl Rapp.
In April 1917 the name was changed to BMW GmbH. That same year its emblem symbolizing the flag of the Free State of Bavaria was created. A year later, the company was renamed BMW AG.
Max Friz, an engineer at BMW, developed in 1917 a high-compression aircraft engine that reduced performance loss at heights. The invention had a great impact and BMW received an order for 2000 engines from the Prussian army.
After the end of World War I and the Treaty of Versailles the manufacture of aircraft engines was banned for 5 years, a milestone that looked like the end of BMW.
In 1922, the main shareholder of the company, Camillo Castiglioni, ended up leaving Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG and took the rights to the BMW brand.
In 1928, after the purchase of Automobilwerk Eisenach, BMW became a car manufacturer. His first serial car was a model named 3/15 P, manufactured under license from Austin Seven.
In 1932 came the considered first authentic BMW called AM1, a vehicle of larger size and more advanced technique. A year later the first new-build vehicle carried out entirely by BMW technicians, the 303, would arrive.
That same year, aircraft engine construction was expanded and vehicles and motorcycles became a smaller business. Despite this, models released at the time such as the 326, le 327 and the sports roadster 328 were popular.
By order of the allied occupying forces, BMW was unable to manufacture vehicles for 3 years after the war.
In 1951 came the first post-war vehicle, the BMW 501, a luxury model nicknamed Barockengel (Baroque Angel), for its elongated body. It was too expensive to produce, losing DM 4,000 per specimen.
BMW's recovery would come from businessman Herbert Quandt. It managed to increase its stake in the company to 60% and, thanks to this, BMW obtained the necessary financial means to develop a middle-class vehicle.
In 1962 he introduced the BMW 1500, a new category vehicle that was well received with its BMW 1800 and BMW 2000 versions. The definitive recovery would come in 1966 with the BMW E114 model.
Between 1970 and 1993, Eberhard von Kuenheim was CEO of BMW. During this era sales multiplied by 19, automobile production quadrupled and motorcycle production tripled. Along with this, the number of employees grew and new production sites were created in Germany, Austria, South Africa and the United States.
In 1973 the Four Cylinders, the company's main administrative building, was opened next to the Olympic City of Munich. And in 1990 the BMW Research and Innovation Center with more than 6000 employees.
In 1994 it acquired the English manufacturer Rover Group but this decision ended up having serious economic consequences. The expected sales figures were never reached and BMW decided in 2000 to finish the project with Rover. Rover and MG were sold to 4 British investors and Land Rover to the American builder Ford.
Little by little, the German brand was introducing designs focused on the so-called Series 3, Series 5 and Series 7. He also introduced with Z1 a sports model with coupe and convertible bodies, which has evolved with the Z3, Z4 and Z8 models, this one of great luxury.
BMW has also developed off-road vehicles, the first being the X5 in 1999.
In recent years he has presented a very innovative scooter, called C1, which has a solid structure above the driver's head and a seat belt that grant the possibility of driving without a helmet.
